2/2 is for the 2 of us!

It’s a long story, but the gist of it is that some things are meant to be.

Today is my second wedding anniversary, but I’ve been married for more than 20 years! How can this be? I married the same guy twice — once on April 12, 1993, and again on February 2, 2012. It’s a long story, but the gist of it is that some things are meant to be. Things like those traditional vows that talk about going through the stages of ‘rich and poor’, ‘sickness and health’, ‘thick and thin’. It’s so true. Our first marriage suffered a huge trauma in 2007 that took us from rich to poor, and from health to sickness, and certainly from thick to thin. After struggling with it, and through it, for 3 years, we decided we had to divide to conquer. So, in February of 2010, we put 8000 miles between us to lead completely separate lives, but we stay connected, always searching for the opening that would repair, restore and reunite us.

The important things are the feelings and understandings between the ONLY 2 people involved.

For 2 years, we wrote countless emails, Skyped each weekend, posted to and ‘liked’ each other’s Facebook timelines, but not until he came to South Korea (where I was living and working) did we realize that it’s not ‘things’ that are meant to be, but that WE are meant to be…together! The flood gate (of tears) opened, and we were swept away with planning for our second chance. I was adamant that the second time around should not be just a reunion, but a true renewal. I am a believer that we cannot start over, but we can always start again. Everything must be new and different! As anyone who knows me will attest, I try never to repeat any experience. I try to learn from the experience the first time around, and grow from there!

And grow we did — from sickness to health, from poor to rich (or perhaps ‘comfortable’ is a better word), and well…let’s not talk about the thick and thin of us. That’s always a work in progress. The important things aren’t really measurable. The important things are the feelings and understandings between the ONLY 2 people involved. In our case, the words of Peter Cetera as sung by Cher summed it up perfectly:
After all the stops and starts,
We keep coming back to these two hearts.
Two angels who’ve been rescued from the fall.
After all that we’ve been through,
It all comes down to me and you.
So much so, in fact, that I made this video for the vows of our second wedding, because as the song goes, I guess it’s meant to be, forever you and me, after all.

Happy 2nd Anniversary! I love you, honey!

Absolutely perfect, the song, the pictures, (there is not a bad one in the bunch and each fits exactly to the lyrics playing over it) a “very handsome” couple, “beautiful” people on the outside with loving hearts on the inside; however, what has always been the most apparent to me was how the two of you were “together,” seamless, “right,” a given. I cannot describe the emptiness I felt when you separated, almost like it was my own loss, and in a way, it truly was, because it seemed like something that just “was,” “wasn’t” anymore and that threw my whole world off. I was devastated that this “given” was absent. Now all is “right” again and you “are.” Happy Anniversary. And here’s to 2, 22 and 222 more!!!

Thanks for sharing your feelings about us. There are many people who had the same reaction, but none so deep as us. Thankfully, we hung on until the “right” time came along again. I always said, and I still say that he is the “rightest” thing I’ve ever done! And of course, he would tell you that “I’m always right”, and then he would be right again! 🙂 We don’t really celebrate on this 2/2 date every year, but we have special memories of our private (as in only us and a city hall full of Koreans) and unique ceremony in Seoul, but that’s a whole separate blog entry, I do believe!

Thanks for the compliments, Daniele. I agree that we have something special; something to treasure, just as we do your friendship. I miss you too!

      Happy Heart Month, all around!
