There’s No Place Like Home

What is home? Where is home? Who is home? As a self-proclaimed “citizen of the world”, I have had many homes. I have moved between continents, countries, cities and houses. But, home is not just the house or apartment that I live in. It’s not just a mark on the map where I carry out my daily life. Nor is it the wider community, culture or nation of people that give me a sense of home. It actually has very little to do with bricks and mortar, beaches, mountains, plains, or skyscrapers. It has everything to do with the fact that “home” ends in “me”. That is, I am always curious and excited to explore new ways to grow, learn, ponder, and understand, not so much where, but HOW I fit into this world.

As an expat, whenever anyone from the states asks me “when are you coming home?”, I always answer, “I’m AT home”, which usually results in some eye rolling and heavy sighs. Well, the truth of the matter is that I feel “at home” wherever I am; it is in me. So what is home? For me, it is the strength and courage to move, and keep moving, and make do with what I have. It is the creative adventure of transforming the foreign into familiar and the cryptic into comprehensible. And where is home? It is in the constant curiosities and daily discoveries of what it means to be alive. It is in the desire and passion to decorate my life with real love, beauty and truth. Then, who is home? A healthy, lively, grateful, mindful, evolving, spiritual person. Hi honey, I’m home!

Anybody else home? If not, maybe it’s time to make yourself at home. You can rest assured that ‘there’s no place like home’.

Wherever you go, there you are! As a fellow globe trotter and part time expat I agree that home is where our heart is – inside us.

      Hi Marlane!
Great to see you here! Thanks for reading and commenting on this post. I think most of us expats are like-minded and like-hearted. I think we give a whole new meaning to a “home away from home”.
