Everything, when it’s yours! I’m big on names, and naming things. To me, it is the most identifying element of a person or thing, and should never be erred in any way or scoffed at or put asunder. A name should be created and applied in an effort to honor and celebrate the individual or item it represents, and recognized and used with the same esteem.
As for naming things like pets, paintings, plants, or even blogs, it should be something unique and applicable to the item. As a neologiphile, I think any unique, meaningful, or definitive word that represents the individual behavior or personality of the creature or creation is perfect.
It should garner and warrant the most attention of any interaction. It is the first and foremost way we initiate a relationship with another being. We ask, “what is your name” or “what is its name”? When the answer comes, we should listen carefully, and take note. Repeat the name you hear and make sure you are pronouncing it correctly. If there is (or will be) reason to write it out, make sure you know the proper spelling. This is never more important that in today’s technological world, where email addresses are the sum of someone’s name or some derivation of that, which will always require correct spelling. For instance, the email address I currently use for corresponding with almost everyone, from my students to subscriptions of others’ blogs is my full name (first and last, in that order, no spaces, all one word).
HOWEVER, I am always amazed at how many people either get the email address wrong, based on an assumed spelling, or get the email address right, and greet me with an alternative spelling of my name. What’s up with that? Look at what you are typing into the address bar! If my email address is my name, why wouldn’t you start your message with “Dear [same name, same spelling as the email address]”? BUT, sooooo many people don’t. It’s strange…and offensive to me.
As for naming things like pets, paintings, plants, or even blogs, it should be something unique and applicable to the item. As a neologiphile, I think any unique, meaningful, or definitive word that represents the individual behavior or personality of the creature or creation is perfect. A derivative of an appropriate word might also be in order. Thus, the more unique and appropriate to the item, the better. This is the way in which this personal blog site was “KRIStened”. That is, KRIS is a nickname that I have been called throughout my life — a derivative of my full name, Kristina. The fact that the blog consists of the eclectic aspects of my life seemed to lend itself well to the idea of “KRISellaneous” posts. The word miscellaneous, comes from the Latin word miscere, meaning “to mix.” You might have heard the expression “a mixed bag,” which applies when you don’t quite know what you’re going to get. Similarly, KRISellaneous can describe something with many variations, like a person who expresses herself in many different ways. Thus, this personal blog was conceived and KRIStened in the name of expressing the diversity of experiences and evolution within one very kaleidoscopic life — mine!
I hope you will enjoy the contents of my somewhat organized “junk drawer”, as that is where I keep my KRISellaneous life!
