Everybody knows grapefruit is good for you. It’s been touted as one of ‘the world’s healthiest foods’, and has long been the icon of a dieter’s breakfast. Sure, you can also peel it and put sections in salads and such, or squeeze the juice for drinks or add it to sauces. And while all that might be cool, this girl likes it HOT! That’s right, broiled in fact.
I start with the usual preparation by cutting it in half and separating the sides of each section from the dividing membranes. Then, place the halves under the broiler until juices start to bubble up to the top. For breakfast, I sometimes sprinkle a little cinnamon-sugar on top before broiling to create a crispy, caramelized cap, and then mound up some Craisins or a little dollop of granola. But, it’s not just for breakfast anymore. Broil it and top it with a small chicken liver, a proscuitto rosette or even a slice of Spam for an elegant and unusual appetizer at your next dinner party. If you prefer to drink grapefruit, just pour off the warm, spicy juices to make a tart tropical tea, or add some rum for a tangy twist to a Hot Toddy.
Whatever you do, remember, some like it hot!
